GT Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing) Sample # 47
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children’s sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter:
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
Write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write your own address.
Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,
First of all, I would like to thank you for your decision to spend money for the benefit of our community. I appreciate your willingness to sponsor a local juvenile sports team or alternatively arrange two open-air concerts. I would like to express my gratitude and share my opinion regarding this.
No doubt, financial support to a junior sports team will be extremely beneficial for both the players and your business. With your sponsorship, they would get better training which will develop their potential in sports and in parallel promote your products. A few of them will become professional athletes in the future to bring fame for our city.
On the other hand, paying for open-air concerts is also a good idea. People will immensely enjoy the performance and some local bands would get the chance to show their talents. It in return can promote our city to visitors.
I firmly believe that your either action will benefit our community greatly. However, in my opinion, supporting the local sports team has a greater result than escalating the music fans by sponsoring concerts. A concert would last only for a couple of hours and people will soon forget it. But your support for the junior sports team will be remembered for a long and would give us many opportunities to celebrate and cheer.
I would like to thank you once again for your initiatives.
