GT Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing) Sample # 24

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You recently received a letter from a friend asking for advice about whether to go to college or try to get a job. You think he/she should get a job.

Write a letter to this friend. In your letter:

  • say why he/she would not enjoy going to college
  • explain why getting a job is a good idea for him/her
  • suggest types of job that would be suitable for him/her

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear …………,

Model Answer 1:

Dear Fincher,

Hope you are doing great. It’s been a long since I last met you. I was quite busy with my studies and a part-time job that I am doing at Beckison’s. It’s very wise of you to take some time before deciding whether to have a job or get admitted to a college. As this decision has a profound impact on your future, you should consider each option thoroughly.

As you know I have started my University just after finishing my high school and consequently, I couldn’t get any job experience in my field which I often regret. I believe you should work for a while and after that, continue your education in a subject that you feel interested in. Choose the subject carefully as it would define your future career path.

By getting a suitable job you will gain some valuable interpersonal skills such as delegating a task or working in a team. The job experience will further your decision-making capabilities as well as presentation skills. Moreover, it will open doors for better job opportunities in the future.

I feel you should work at a tour service providing company. It makes sense as it would be easier to find a job in your city in this sector and it would let you travel extensively and meet new people.

I hope my suggestion would help you decide what is best for you.

Warm regards,

Russell

Model Answer 2:

Dear Mathew,

Thank you for seeking my advice in deciding whether to go to a college or getting a job. Knowing how you like enjoying outdoors these days instead of getting stuck in class and doing loads of home works, I don’t think that you would really enjoy your time at a college.

Therefore, I would like to advise you in favour of getting a job. In fact, I feel like you really have grown “impatience” with your studies which, of course, can happen sometimes. And, should really that be the case, it is better to have a little “time off” from your studies in order to set the priorities in your life by getting a job for a “change” that you could actually enjoy.

If you ask me what kind of job would be suitable for you, I would suggest that you go for some kind of “technical and on the field” works since you don’t exactly enjoy being stuck “inside” of a room whole day. Besides, job experience in the technical field will help you perform better in the future when you go to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Warm regards,

Jeremy Lewis

  • Dear Jacob,

I’m glad to know that you are going to graduate from senior high school within a couple of weeks. Many congratulations! However, you have some concern about your feature, that is, whether to get a job or go to university.

I vividly remember that you had set up an ambition to become an interior decorator to design a warming home for your family when you were a child. In this case, as your friend, I’ll suggest you jump into this industry first and go to a university afterwards. Firstly, this field emphasizes more amount of practical experience rather than a bachelor degree does. So, it would be a good chance to experience some real work in this field during the gap time. On the other hand, you can not only gain hands-on experience but also save money for further education.

What a coincidence! There is an open position of interior decorator assistant in Cambridge Deco, which is run by Daniel, one of my close business partners. I enclosed his business card with this letter and would be happy to be your reference.

    Best wishes,

    Roger
