Importance of learning history is a hotly debated topic that often divides opinion. Many people say that studying history is irrelevant whereas others believe it is absolutely essential to learn history. This essay takes a look at both sides of the argument. However, I am in favour of learning history for the sake of a glorious future.
People who find history tedious and insignificant, believe that it is a waste of time to search nooks and crannies of the past when the future seems real and more fascinating. They go on arguing that it will be highly productive if one stops cogitating about what has been done in the past and commences to contemplate regarding what has to be done. That way we could find the answers to existing as well as upcoming problems. For instance, it seems pointless to spend hours to learn how the Romans conquered Britain. Instead, if students spend their time studying science, language, computer, and other valuable subjects, they could hone their skill to face the world and contribute to make it a better place.
On the contrary, many are strongly in favour of learning history. According to them, history aims to bridge the gulf between the past and future of mankind. That is to say that the present was shaped by the past. So, if someone wants to understand the present and forecast the future, he has to comprehend the past that moulds it. A case in point is racial issues. One cannot completely understand it until he studies the history of race relations. Moreover, history helps us learn from the mistakes of the past as the study of history helps see things in their true perspective. Last but not least, history serves as a guide to life. The lessons of the past which teach people to overcome the pitfalls of life and to trace the path of future success.
To conclude, some people think that studying history is worthless, whereas others believe that the significance of learning history is utterly important. In light of both perspectives, I have to admit that history is absolutely essential for our daily life as well as a grand future.
