Model Answer:

Whether young individuals should be obligated to engage in unpaid work during their free time to assist the local community or be granted the autonomy to decide how they allocate their leisure hours is often hotly debated. While some argue that mandatory community service instils a sense of responsibility, others believe in their freedom to choose leisure activities. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and present my opinion.

Proponents of requiring young people to engage in unpaid community work argue that it instils a sense of social responsibility and civic duty. They believe that by dedicating their free time to serving the local community, young individuals develop valuable skills, such as teamwork, empathy, and problem-solving, which are essential for their personal growth and future success. Moreover, they argue that community service allows young people to understand and appreciate the needs of others, fostering a stronger sense of community and social cohesion. For instance, volunteering at a local shelter or participating in environmental cleanup projects can expose young individuals to different realities and inspire them to actively contribute to the betterment of society.

On the other hand, some believe that enforcing mandatory unpaid community work might undermine the voluntary and genuine nature of community service. It is crucial to nurture intrinsic motivation and passion in young individuals, encouraging them to pursue activities that align with their interests and aspirations. When young people have the freedom to explore their passions, they are more likely to develop a sense of ownership and commitment towards their chosen endeavours. For example, a young person interested in art may find fulfilment in creating public murals or organizing art workshops for the community. Granting autonomy in the use of their free time can promote creativity, self-discovery, and personal development. Moreover, imposing mandatory community service may lead to resentment or disengagement. Instead, young people should be encouraged to explore their passions, pursue personal development activities, and make choices that align with their values.

In conclusion, while some advocate for mandatory unpaid community work for young people, I firmly believe that they should have the freedom to choose how they spend their free time. Imposing mandatory service may undermine the voluntary and genuine nature of community work and could lead to resentment or disengagement. Young individuals should be encouraged to explore their interests, pursue personal development activities, and make choices that align with their passions and aspirations.
