The ethical consideration surrounding the use of animals for human benefit has long been a contentious issue. While some argue that it is acceptable to exploit animals for various purposes, others firmly believe that such actions are morally wrong. This essay aims to explore both viewpoints and present the argument that we can sensibly use animals for our benefit for serious reasons without exploiting them, and stop using them merely for entertainment and fun.
Some argue that it is acceptable to use animals for the serious benefits of humans as animals have been essential in advancing medical research, leading to the development of life-saving treatments and vaccines. For instance, laboratory animals have played a crucial role in the development of antibiotics and surgical procedures, ultimately benefiting human health. We can use them as our companions when we take proper care of them. For instance, cats and dogs are two best friends of humans, and we can keep them as long as we treat them sensibly.
On the contrary, others say that it is morally wrong to use animals for our benefit. Animals possess inherent rights and should not be treated as mere commodities. Exploiting animals for entertainment, such as in circuses or zoos, disregards their natural behaviours and confines them to artificial environments. Furthermore, the conditions in which animals are often kept, such as factory farming, raise concerns about animal welfare and the ethical implications of mass production for human consumption.
In my opinion, it is crucial to respect animal welfare and use them only in important areas like research. This can be achieved through responsible practices that minimize harm to animals and prioritise their well-being.
In conclusion, the question of whether it is acceptable to use animals for human benefit or whether such actions are morally wrong is a complex issue. However, adopting a balanced perspective that considers both important human needs and animal welfare is crucial.
